Chapter 12

The next morning found us gathered around the dining room table for breakfast, continuing the arguments from the previous evening. The Draftman brothers were the only ones not present. Rand had nearly gone ballistic after learning about Ravena’s trap. Zara intervened, pointing out that Ravena’s kind used ghosts as an energy source and, like Tess, he could have been a liability. Rand threw back that Ravena wouldn’t have been able to See him without Wade or another Sighted person by her side. Sam had been strangely quiet during all of it, and even Gloria was not her usual bubbly self. Toby and Jake lay a few feet away, watching the proceedings with worried eyes.

I stood as my cell phone rang, excusing myself to the other side of the room. Before the phone was even to my ear, Wade began speaking, sounding frantic. All I caught was something about Romilda and fire.

“Wade, slow down. Are you okay?”

His breath was coming in loud pants over the phone. “My house. Romilda burned it to the ground.”

My first thought was to wonder how Romilda got through the protection spell at Jeremy’s. Then it registered that he had said house, not RV or trailer. “What were you doing at your house? I thought you were going to stay within the protected area? Is Gretchen okay?”

Everyone at the table went silent as they focused on my conversation. Since I had their attention anyway, I walked back to the table and put the phone on speaker as he haltingly told me what happened.

“We’re okay. We’re still here, at the park. The neighbors have been trying to reach us, but neither of us have answered our phones in days. They tried again today and Gretchen finally answered. They said our house burned down during the night. There’s nothing left. We’ve lost everything, Ms. Devraux. Everything.” His voice hitched and he paused to collect himself. “We got a text from Romilda, right after that. She threatened to burn my Gretchen next, and make me watch as she did it. I can’t let her hurt my wife. I don’t know what to do.”

Before I could formulate an answer, Sam spoke up. “Mr. Clairmont, this is Samantha Stone, Roxanne Devraux’s friend and attorney. Right now you need to sit tight where you’re at. She’s trying to draw you out.” Rand nodded his agreement. “You can’t let her do that. Stay within the park boundaries and let us handle this. Was your home insured?”

“Y-yes,” he stammered.

“Was the fire department present?” she asked.

“The neighbors said they watched as the fire department tried to put it out and it was like nothing they’d ever seen before. They said there’s not even anything left of my car but a lump of twisted metal.”

“Don’t worry about any of that. I know there are some things that can’t be replaced, but your insurance should cover everything else. I’ll help you handle all of that, rest assured.”

“Th-thank you, Ms. Stone. I don’t know what to say.” The gratitude and relief in Wade’s voice brought tears to my own eyes.
